Disney Mediterranean Cruise - Day 5 Pompeii, Sorrento and Isle of Capri

On Wednesday, August 3 we arrived at the port of Naples, Italy. Naples is a town that extends into the Gulf of Naples under the shadow of Mt. Vesuvius. Pizza, one of Italy's most famous foods, originated in Naples. Eggplant Parmesan originated in Naples as well. This was another long 11 hour day of touring, so the kids went to the Kids Club on the cruise ship instead. The adults headed to the Isle of Capri for a boat tour along the shoreline, and a walking tour of Sorrento and Pompeii.

While in Capri, we saw the Faraglioni of Capri which are 3 immense, 80-100 meter high stacks of rock in the beautiful blue sea. The coastline was beautiful!!! This was probably my favorite place out of all the places we visited. Next we went to Sorrento where we had an Italian lunch and enjoyed Italian wine. Sorrento is known for its inlaid woodwork. There were amazing pieces in the shops we visited. I purchased a beautiful music box from one of the stores.

Next we took a short bus ride to Pompeii to see the ancient Ruins. It is a partially buried ancient Roman town which was destroyed and completely buried during a long catastrophic eruption of the volcano Mount Vesuvius spanning 2 days in the year AD 79. The eruption buried Pompeii under 4 to 6 meters of ash and pumice, and it was lost for nearly 1700 years before being rediscovered in 1749. They are still excavating the site today. It was a great insight into the life of a city during the Roman Empire. We were walking on the actual cobblestone roads from that time period and you could still see the tracks from the carriages used then in the road.

What a great couple of days, there is so much history in Italy and I love the coastline!!
